State Voices claims 140 million voter contacts nationwide in 2022
29.5 million voter contacts in Georgia; 16.6 million in Michigan; 15 million in Pennsylvania
How do millions of voter contacts affect elections?
A recent report from the State Voices Affiliated Network, “Count Every Vote, Hear Every Voice, Meet Every Need,” describes how organizers and advocates “advanced this movement in 2022.”
Influence Watch says as a left-of-center organization “State Voices connects advocacy and activist organizations to each other so they can collaborate in ‘state tables’ on mutual policy goals.”
The network consists of 25 “State Tables,” 8 “Emerging States” and 1200 partners.
88% of the State Tables are led by women with 72% led by women of color.
Our network of advocates is fighting to ensure that historically marginalized voices are heard — not only during elections seasons but all year, every year.
Parker Thayer from Capital Research Center explains funding for State Voices:
When it comes to securing funding, State Voices is no slouch. State Voices raised and re-granted $8.7 million to the state engagement tables in 2022 and $9.4 million in 2020. The state tables, in turn, distribute funds to their partners, ensuring State Voices a certain level of influence as a funder while giving the partner organizations a reason to keep collaborating.
The money that isn’t sent to the partners is then spent on training and equipping activists with “civic tech” tools that would normally be outside the reach most of small-time state activists.
In a map the report shows 140 million voter contacts for the 2022 election from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Over half of the “voter contacts” were Voter Participation Center mailings
One of the State Voices partners is the Voter Participation Center.
A recent WatchdogLab article gave details of 85.5 million mailings from the Voter Participation Center and its sister organization, Center for Voter Information from 32 states. Those mailings made up over half of the voter contacts reported by State Voices, as shown in the table below.
The report from State voices said their total included “90 million contacts over mail via Voter Participation Center.” It’s unclear why the State Voices total contacts for some states were less than the VPC+CVI totals (shown in red above).
Nineteen states and DC had no VPC/CVI mailings. The State Voices voter contacts in those states were relatively small except for Massachusetts, Kentucky and Utah.
State Voices Affiliated Network
Other State Voices affiliates made over 55 million voter contacts in 2022 but little is know about those voter contacts, which are likely different in various states.
The State Voices web page shows several dozen of their partners. A map of their network is below.
